Red Earth II is a 2005 top-down shooter Flash game developed by Jacob Grahn.

A sequel to the original wasn't planned despite ending with "to be continued", but its unexpected success lead him to reconsider.[1] The game received 6th place in the same competition he entered the first one in. The series impressed Armor Games enough to pay Jiggmin to make a larger, more expansive project.[2][3]

Red Earth II similarly ends on a cliffhanger, but never received a follow-up, though one was planned.

Plot[]

"Bot002, you have been air dropped to Bot001's location. Bot001 was badly damaged while stealing the ring from Sauron's fortress, and it is now up to you to transport the ring to the foot of Mount Doom. Sauron is now aware that the ring has been taken, and he will be trying to prevent your escape.

We have failed to destroy the ring twice, due to the power of the ring over our biological minds. What can the ring do against a machine?"

Gameplay[]

Players operate a tank and must locate the ring and escape while surviving enemy fire.

Red Earth II Gameplay

Bot002 battling a boss.

Puzzles must be solved along the way to deactivate forcefields, which include finding keys or disabling generators. White spheres are also scattered throughout the map that heal them when absorbed.

Controls have been simplified, as all weapons and interactions use the mouse instead of having separate buttons. Players additionally have access to 4 new weapons:

  • Bullets, which are more powerful but fire slower than the first game's turret.
  • A short-range flamethrower.
  • A forcefield that can also trap enemies.
  • Powerful white bombs that follow patterns drawn by the player.

Along with regular enemies, guard bots that act as bosses are found around the area for players to defeat.

Changes[]

Other differences between the original include:

  • Title font is in "Impact" instead of "Times New Roman".
  • Earth is slightly shifted down-right on the title screen.
  • Removal of zoom in/zoom out keys.
  • Instructions, settings and the story are now on a single mandatory page.
  • Ability to adjust music and sound effect volumes.
