The Game of Disorientation is a 2006 puzzle-skill Flash game developed by Jacob Grahn.

Made in 6 days while he took a break from Destroyers of Planets, it went on to become one of Jiggmin's most successful games.[1][2] It received 250,000 plays on Newgrounds and had the 38th highest score on the site within 2 weeks of release.[3]

Disorientation was acclaimed for its gameplay and unique visual effects, with some reviewers likening it to a drunk simulator.[4][5][6] Newgrounds' community voted it best submission of the day and one of the top 10 games of the month.[7][8] It won the "Most Innovative" award in Kongregate's first contest for its disorienting effects and was runner-up for best game of the week.[9][10][11]

Publications have since named it one of the greatest Flash games of all time. It was featured in The Telegraph's "20 best online Flash games" article, while TechCult named it among their list of 150 best Flash games.[12][13][14] ExpertReviews and GameSolo likewise included it on their top 10 lists as well.[15][16] It was also featured in The Mercury News and Russian gaming magazine Igromania.[17][18] The University of Minnesota's "Computational Vision Laboratory" even included it among their coursework at one point.[19]

Gameplay[]

The Game of Disorientation is a top-down game where players make it from one end of a level to the other without touching spikes, clones and other hazards. As they progress, the camera increasingly spins around and stretches the level to trip them up.

Players advance through levels as the camera spins, squeezes and otherwise distorts the screen.

Levels don't have a time limit, though the game tracks how long it takes them to beat it for high scores.

Mobile Differences[]

The Game of Disorientation Mobile Gameplay

Mobile version of the first level.

A mobile version was uploaded to Kongregate in 2010, with differences between it and the desktop game including:

  • No jiggmin.com ad.
  • The moving swirl on the title screen is absent and the letters no longer fly at the screen when they rotate.
  • Sound button moved to the bottom-left corner to prevent it from overlapping text.
  • Instructions are in Vrinda instead of Village Idiot BB.
  • Addition of arrow keys in the bottom-right corner.
  • Lower frame rate. Quality's also set on medium rather than high, with it switching to low whenever the screen zooms in or out.
  • The goal point is made of more simple non-moving shapes.
  • Shiny clones lack detail and are only flashing colors now.

Trivia[]

  • This is Jiggmin's most played game on Newgrounds with over 616,000 views.[20]
  • The Armor Games version was released 2 and a half years after the others and includes added advertisements for the site, something that carried over to all future releases of Jiggmin's games there.
  • A bug popped up during 2014 in the non-Armor Games and BubbleBox builds that prevents players from advancing past level 1, with death causing conditions similar to the final level. Jiggmin speculated the file became corrupt or new versions of Flash broke something, though he never fixed it.[21]
  • Various images fly past the screen during the final level, which are listed below.
